Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR)
The Level table above is based on the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This is the principal point of reference for language learning within the European Union and is closely related to the Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE) scale of examinations and certifications, which covers 24 European languages.
Also shown are University of Cambridge ESOL exams for Business and General English, International House Barcelona levels and the BULATS and TOEIC test score equivalents.
Cambridge ESOL examinations
The Cambridge exams are the leading range of certificates for learners of English. The Business English (BEC) exams are BEC Higher (taken after 780-980 hours of study); BEC Vantage (630-780 hours); and BEC Preliminary (480-580 hours).
The General English equivalents are Advanced (CAE), First Certificate (FCE) and the Key English Test (KET).
